Why Join Camp Staff
Joining Camp Staff is a great way to learn more about Camp Jayhawk and Scouting in general.
Reasons to work at Camp Jayhawk include:
- To earn awards - Camp Staff currently in a BSA program can continue to earn awards during their summer.
- To work in fun program areas such as: Aquatics, Ecology, Outdoor Skills, Handicraft, Target and Range Sports, and STEAM.

Staff members must be at least 15 years old by June 1st to join staff. Many positions on Camp Staff require 18+ or 21+ directors, so you’re never too old to be on Camp Staff! Compensation includes housing, meals, salary, and training. Apply today and get ready for the summer of a lifetime!

Applications: To apply, use the quick links to download the Staff Application for the upcoming season. After filling out the application you can email it to the Camp Director and schedule an interview.
Interviews: Interviews are typically held during the winter break of most school districts at the Jayhawk Area Council Service Center. Virtual interviews can also be requested for those who it is not practical to drive to the Council Office. Be sure to bring your Staff Application if you did not send it to the Camp Director prior to the interview. It is appropriate to wear a BSA Field Uniform (Class A) to your interview if you are already registered in the BSA.
A CIT is a great way to get a better understanding of what it is like to be on Camp Staff before committing to a full summer. CITs will be required to attend Staff Week.*
Although it is not requried, it is highly recommended that CITs have National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) before being a CIT. Jayhawk Area Council typically hosts an NYLT course the week before Staff Week. Click here for more information about NYLT.
Volunteering is a great way to get involved with Falley Scout Reservation during the summer. Volunteers can volunteer for as little as a day to the entire summer. If you are interested in volunteering with Program, please contact the Camp Director and Program Director. If you would like to be a volunteer commissioner, contact the Camp Commissioner.
Note: Volunteers are still subject to certain Training Requirements. Contact the Camp Director to see what training you will need to have completed.
- Youth Protection Training – Completion of Youth Protection Training is required of all camp staff, paid and volunteer. The links to this training can be found through the My.Scouting.org training portal. YOUR YPT CERTIFICATION MUST BE PRESENTED TO THE CAMP DIRECTOR BEFORE YOU MOVE INTO YOUR CABIN FOR THE SUMMER
- Hazardous Weather Training – Completion of Hazardous Weather training is required of all camp staff, paid and volunteer. The links to this training can also be found through the My.Scouting.org training portal under Program Safety.
- Unlawful Harassment Training – Completion of Unlawful Harassment training is required of all paid camp staff members. Volunteers do not need to complete this training. The link will redirect you to the online provider of this training.
- First Aid/CPR/AED Training – At least half of all staff at a camp will need to have First Aid/CPR/AED training from the American Red Cross or a similar agency. Contact the Camp Director to see if you will need this training. Depending on availability and how many Staff will need this training, the course a course may be conducted during Staff Week. If you are currently certified in First Aid/CPR/AED please let the Camp Director know immediately so they can reduce the planned attendance of any training they may set up prior to camp.
- National Camping School – Program Area Directors (Ecology, Outdoor Skills, Target and Range Sports, Aquatics, Program and Camp Directors) need to hold current certifications in their area of expertise. National Camping School provides the needed training and certification for these important roles. This one week training is provided for our staff hired for these positions. Certifications are good for five years, and Camping Schools are held throughout the year to meet your schedule.
Please note that the requirements listed below are not complete. Certain positions may have more requirements that must be met before the beginning of the summer.
- Age 14+ by June 1: can serve as a CIT. Please see the CIT Section for more information.
- Age 15+ by June 1: can serve as in any of the following instructor level position.
- Outdoor Skills Staff Handicraft Staff
- Baden Powell Staff
- Ecology Staff
- STEAM Staff
- Age 16+ by June 1: can serve in any of the following Instructor level positions or those found in the Age 15 category.
- Target and Range Sports Staff
- OA Coordinator - Must be Approved by Dzie-Hauk Tonga Lodge
- Kitchen Staff
- Aquatics staff
- Age 18+ by June 1: any of the following Director Level positions or
- Camp Commissioner - Must have experience as a Council Commissioner or attend National Camp School
- Outdoor Skills Director - Must attend National Camp School
- Handicraft Director
- Baden Powell Director - Must attend National Camp School
- Ecology Director - Must attend National Camp School or have prior work/education in an Ecology field/major.
- Trek Staff
- Archery Director - Must be _____________
- Assistant Kitchen Director - Must have Food Handler Certification
- Assistant Aquatics Director (typically Boat Dock Director)
- Assistant Ranger
- Trading Post Manager
- STEAM Director
- Age 21+ by June 1: can serve in any position
- Program Director - Must have attend NCS
- Camp Director - Must have attended NCS
- Camp Medic - Must hold an EMR certification or higher
- Aquatics Director - Must have attend NCS
- Trek Director - Must have attended NCS
- Target and Range Sports Director - Must have attend NCS
- Kitchen Director - Must have a ServeSafe Manager certification
